Building Your EIQ

 By Nina Atwood

Would you like to have a higher EIQ? If so, you can, but it is a process over time that requires your commitment to growth. If you languish in your comfort zone, you won’t grow and your EIQ will not grow.

If you want to develop your EIQ, do the thing that stretches you rather than the thing that feels safe and comfortable. If you have an opportunity to meet new people, jump all over it. Make yourself walk up to strangers and engage in a conversation. Pay attention to the social nuances that are taking place all around you.

Notice the person who seems to move fluidly through social situations, engaging others and easily forming new relationships. That person can be your mentor in developing a high EIQ. Pay attention and copy the behavior. Try it on like a new pair of shoes. You can always take [the behavior] back off if it doesn’t really fit. Experiment a little, stretch yourself.

If your current social circle is people who aren’t up to anything in particular in life, whose major topics of conversation are news, weather, sports, and gossip, develop a new social circle. You won’t grow unless you surround yourself with people who have goals, who are up to something, who talk about things that matter in life. Your EIQ will grow as you interact more with people who have high EIQs.
