S.M.A.R.T. Dating: Attraction
By Nina Atwood
Smart dating means a focus on attraction, and that’s not about a hot body and movie star face. It’s about answering the fundamental question: what am I attracting? Even more important: What do I want to attract in the future?
What are you attracting? To really understand it, take a look at your past relationships. If you look back and see love, devotion, emotional availability and real commitment, you’re attracting the right stuff. Of course, if that’s what you see, you’re probably not single today unless you lost your spouse through death. If you look back and see other things: painful patterns and agonizing break-ups, you’re not attracting the right stuff for a lifetime love.
Attracting the right stuff for lasting love boils down to a very simple principle: caring for yourself first. No one, no matter how special or attractive, is worth sacrificing your self-esteem. Love is supposed to feel good, not bad. Once you take a personal stand to put your own well-being above any relationship, you will only attract people who care for and respect you. Care and respect are the baseline elements of a good relationship. With that foundation, there is the opportunity to discover chemistry, romance, friendship, companionship, and all of the joys of a lasting love.
